Seniors Living Across Borders

🌍 Exploring Senior Living Innovations Across Borders 🏘️

This past month, I had the privilege of touring some of the most representative senior living developments in Western Europe, with similar lifestyle and cultural heritage .

In Île-de-France, I visited communities such as Domitys, Hespérides, and Les Essentielles, among others, each offering valuable insights into creating vibrant, supportive environments for seniors. These communities are different examples on how design can foster independence while promoting wellness, social connection, and accessibility, depending on socio-economic, financial status, and location. Etre de vivre is a paramount cultural aspect, in particular around delicious french food where the elders socialise.

In Spain, after connecting with the sector through the Senior Living Forum 2024 in Madrid, I had the opportunity to explore Villa Rosita, https://villarosita.es/ an experimental co-housing community governed by its residents. Recently completed, this innovative project offers a fresh perspective on senior living, emphasizing autonomy and collaboration. It also provided a fascinating point of comparison with approaches in the Australasia region, where tailored design continues to evolve.

These experiences highlighted how senior living solutions can adapt to local cultural contexts while addressing universal goals: fostering community, offering choice, and supporting well-being.

At deBLANCO Design Studio, we are deeply inspired by these international examples as we continue to design for the changing needs of seniors. A heartfelt thank you to our European colleagues for their invaluable insights and warm hospitality.
